Taiwan is rated 10th out of 69 major economies in the latest World Digital Competitiveness Ranking released Nov. 4 by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development, the Ministry of Digital Affairs said.
Economies were ranked using 61 criteria in the categories of knowledge, technology and future readiness. Among the benchmarks in the first category, which measures a country’s ability to acquire new technologies, Taiwan placed second in total expenditure on research and development as well as total R&D personnel per capita, and third in educational assessment PISA-math.
In the future readiness category, which assesses progress in digital transformation, Taiwan came in second in company agility, and third in handling opportunities and threats as well as use of big data and analytics, moving the country three spots up to third in the world in this category. The technology category, which evaluates digital innovation capability, placed Taiwan first in the world in IT and media stock market capitalization.
According to the MODA, the results spotlight the success of government policies promoting digital infrastructure development and highlight the strength of Taiwan’s information communication technology sector. The global vote of confidence also bodes well for ongoing government efforts to bolster digital transformation and the development of artificial intelligence, the ministry added.
The MODA said it will step up cooperation with related agencies to address the areas where Taiwan needs improvement in the report, including female researchers, the student-teacher ratio in tertiary education and AI policies passed into law.
Going forward, the ministry said it will continue to evaluate Taiwan’s digital competitive strengths and focus efforts on promoting the AI sector, enhancing cybersecurity resilience, combating fraud and improving government digital infrastructure to create a more secure, convenient and prosperous future for all.
