Premier Cho Jung-tai led a press conference with the heads of related ministries and agencies on Friday, addressing U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement on April 2 (Eastern Daylight Time) of a "reciprocal tariff" policy affecting many nations around the world, including Taiwan. The premier said Taiwan's government has already formulated a support plan in response, comprising nine key areas, 20 measures and a total budget of NT$88 billion (US$2.7 billion) to stabilize the nation's economy, maintain steady industrial development and secure people's livelihoods.
Premier Cho emphasized that Taiwan has long been a staunch and trusted trading partner of the U.S. From collaborating on the creation of non-red supply chains to supporting the U.S.'s needs in artificial intelligence (AI) development, both sides share numerous opportunities for cooperation. The premier hopes Taiwan and the U.S. can continue to strengthen their bilateral partnership and pursue mutually beneficial initiatives, adding that the government will make every effort to work toward these goals.
The premier emphasized that his administrative team developed the new support plan based on industry impact assessments. Of the plan's nine key areas, six focus on the industrial sector, aiming to provide financial support, reduce administrative costs, enhance industry competitiveness, develop diverse markets, offer tax incentives and stabilize employment. The remaining three target the agricultural sector, also providing financial support, enhancing industry competitiveness and developing diverse markets.
Premier Cho further stated that the nine key areas encompass 20 measures, including enhanced financing and loan incentives, tax reductions, strengthening export capabilities, guiding industry transformation, expanding into diverse markets and bolstering the international competitiveness of industries. The government will also pay special attention to traditional industries and micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises, implementing appropriate measures to support them.
Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun stated that the government will fully engage in negotiations with the U.S. to minimize the impact of the tariffs, strive for the best interests of Taiwan's industries, ensure fair competition and cultivate a fair and mutually beneficial relationship between Taiwan and the U.S.
